About the show

Please note that remaining performances of Blithe Spirit have been cancelled following government advice regarding coronavirus (COVID-19).

Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders makes a West End return in classic comedy Blithe Spirit. Raising the roof as bizarre clairvoyant Madame Arcati, Saunders will appear at the Duke of York’s Theatre in this wickedly funny play.

Upper-crust novelist Charles Condomine and his wife Ruth have a ghostly problem. After inviting an eccentric clairvoyant to their home, Charles’ vengeful (and dead) first wife Elvira has been unwittingly unleashed… and she’s ready to make their lives a living hell. As Elvira works at every opportunity to sabotage Charles’ new marriage, she is conveniently invisible to everyone but him.

Jennifer Saunders stars as Madame Arcati in Blithe Spirit’s West End transfer from Theatre Royal Bath. The French and Saunders star is joined by Lisa Dillon (Cranford) and Geoffrey Streatfeild (Spooks).

The play is directed by Richard Eyre, a five-time Olivier Award winner whose work includes Guys and Dolls and time as Artistic Director of London’s National Theatre. A revival of Noel Coward’s masterful comedy, the playwright’s work was last seen in London when Andrew Scott starred in Present Laughter.

With critics raving about the production at its Theatre Royal Bath premiere, Blithe Spirit at the Duke of York’s Theatre is sure to be a hugely entertaining night out. With more laughs than scares in this topsy-turvy ghost story, audiences can catch Saunders and her co-stars when the production opens on 5 March 2020.
