About the show
Brand new musical Groundhog Day premieres the Old Vic Theatre for a limited 10 week run this summer. Based on the BAFTA Award-winning film of the same name, the musical has been adapted for the stage by the creative team behind Matilda the Musical. Director Matthew Warchus has once again teamed up with expert composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, to offer a fresh take on the much loved 1993 film.Groundhog Day follows a day in the life of cynical TV weatherman, Phil Connors, who is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in the isolated town of Punxtutawney, Pennsylvania. He soon finds out that he is not just stuck in the town, but that he’s also trapped in time, having to repeat the same day again and again and again. The audience watch on as he experiments with this phenomenon and tries to understand how to break free from his unusual predicament.
Broadway star Andy Karl stars as Phil, a role made famous on screen by Bill Murray. Karl’s extensive credits include Jersey Boys, Wicked and Saturday Night Fever, with two Tony Award nominations, one being for the musical adaptation of another hit film, Rocky. Groundhog Day will be directed by Matthew Warchus, who recently took over from Kevin Spacey as the Artistic Director of the Old Vic. Warchus’ extensive work as a theatre director includes a plethora of stage adaptations such as Matilda the Musical, Ghost the Musical and The Lord of the Rings.
Karl and Warchus are supported by an all-star creative team, including music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, who is well-known for composing the music to Matilda the Musical. Groundhog Day will also feature choreography from Peter Darling, whose award-winning work can be found in Billy Elliot and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory .
