About the showBased on the hit movie and play Calendar Girls, The Girls is a brand new musical which is set to begin performances at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End from February 2017. Tickets will go on sale on 16th September 2016.
The iconic musician and TV star Gary Barlow’s newest project is The Girls a musical co-written with Tim Firth, the writer who was both behind the original film and play versions of Calendar Girls.
This touching and funny new show follows the true story a group of daring WI ladies from Yorkshire who decide to make a nude calendar in order to raise money for cancer.
Many will already know the story from the original 2003 film, which was directed by Nigel Cole and starred Helen Mirren and Julie Walters. The movie quickly became a firm favourite of many, while also making the touching tale known throughout the country.
In 2009 a new adaptation by original writer Tim Firth was brought to the London stage, with Calendar Girls the play, opening at the Noel Coward Theatre to rave reviews, before going on a UK tour.
In this new version, Tim Firth teams up with Gary Barlow to create a beautiful new show, which has already generated huge amounts of excitement during preview runs in Leeds and Salford.
Barlow is one of the most recognisable pop acts in the UK, having an illustrious solo career as well as countless hit records with his band Take That. He has also been a TV favourite as regular judge on ITV’s X-Factor, as well as recently having seen great stage success with his musical version of Finding Neverland which ran on Broadway for 17 months and received great critical acclaim.
Tim Firth has written many much loved British TV programs and films such as Calendar Girls and Kinky Boots as well as seeing great critical acclaim on stage for his plays Our House and The Flint Street Nativity.
The Girls will begin previews at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End on 28th January 2017, with an official opening on 21st February 2016.
