The Woman in Black Famous Past Cast Members: Joseph Fiennes
Running since 1989, The Woman in Black has seen a number of accomplished actors in its two-man cast, but perhaps the play’s most famous alumni is Joseph Fiennes.
The youngest sibling of fellow actor Ralph Fiennes, Joseph made his stage debut as the Actor in The Woman in Black in 1993. The role serves as a superb showcase for young actors, as it requires a versatile performer who can sustain half of a two-hour show.
He first decided to pursue a career in theatre after studying fine art. He joined the Young Vic Youth Theatre, and then went on to three years of training at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, whose impressive list of graduates includes Simon Russell Beale, Daniel Craig, Ewan McGregor, and Alfred Molina.
After The Woman in Black, Fiennes starred with Helen Mirren in A Month in the Country before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for two seasons. His major film break came in 1998, when he starred in two Oscar-winning films. He played Robert Dudley opposite Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth, and the title role in Shakespeare in Love. For the latter role, he received much critical acclaim, including BAFTA and SAG award nominations. His other film credits include Luther, The Merchant of Venice, and Running with Scissors.
He has made several returns to the stage, including West End appearances in Othello, Epitaph for George Dillon, and Love’s Labours Lost. He has also played the title roles in Edward II at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield and Cyrano de Bergerac at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Most recently, he played Merlin in the television series Camelot, as well as an FBI Special Agent in FlashForward. Later this year, he is scheduled to appear in The Diplomat, a political thriller.
