About the showX-Factor finalist Amelia Lily stars in the award-winning Green Day musical American Idiot, which has returned to London's Arts Theatre following a successful UK tour. American Idiot tells the story of three apathetic suburban youths Johnny, Will, and Tunny who are searching for meaning in their lives. Johnny and Tunny escape to the city while Will stays at home with his pregnant girlfriend Heather. Tunny becomes sucked into the army while Johnny turns to drugs, and soon the three boys find themselves on an exhilarating journey to adulthood.
American idiot the musical features the music of Green Day with lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong and a book by Armstrong and Michael Mayer. The show was expanded from the band’s concept album, a rock opera of the same name. The band are said to have drawn inspiration from The Who and musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar and The Rocky Horror Show when creating the album.
Amelia Lily rose to fame when she came third in the eighth series of the X Factor, and has since enjoyed success with single ‘You Bring Me Joy’. She is joined on stage by double platinum singer songwriter Newton Faulkner, who is well known for playing in music concerts around the world. The two stars perform a score that received a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in 2010. This includes many of Green Day's top hits including “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and of course “American Idiot”. The show also includes additional Green Day music not on the original album.
The musical was first seen at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre back in 2010, it swiftly transferred to Broadway where it opened in 2011 to favourable reviews and played for over a year. The show previously enjoyed a successful UK tour. This Sell a Door Theatre Company production is directed and choreographed by Racky Plews.
American Idiot opened at the Arts Theatre on the 8th July 2016.
