About the show

Award-winning director Polly Findlay (Limehouse at the Donmar Warehouse) leads the West End transfer of David Eldridge’s critically acclaimed play, Beginning. Following a sold-out run at the National’s Dorfman Theatre, the smash-hit production plays at the Ambassadors Theatre, featuring the original cast.

With his previous works including Holy Warriors, Festen and the BBC’s The Scandalous Lady W, starring Natalie Dormer, Eldridge’s new play Beginning is a painfully truthful, humorous look at the start of a new relationship. Charting a real-time encounter between two strangers at a house party, the play examines the fragile moments of risking your heart and taking chances.

Set in the early hours of the morning, David is the final partygoer at Laura’s house-warming for her new flat. Everything is a mess, and the pair are equally tipsy. One more drink? As Beginning progresses, we see the pair embark on the precarious journey of a relationship.

Sam Troughton and Justine Mitchell reprise their roles as Danny and Laura respectively. Troughton has multiple National Theatre credits, including King Lear and The Ritual, as well as the BBC’s popular The Hollow Crown. Mitchell’s credits include Bodies at the Royal Court and Mr Burns at the Almeida Theatre.

With direction by Polly Findlay, the stellar production features choreography by Naomi Said, design by Fly Davis, lighting by Jack Knowles and sound by Paul Arditti.

Receiving five stars from all of London’s major critics, Beginning is a sharp examination of the every day. Playing at London’s Ambassadors Theatre, following the departure of long-running production Stomp, Beginning runs from January 23rd to March 24th 2018, with previews beginning January 15th 2018.
