Caroline, or Change is set in Louisiana, 1963, and follows the life of poorly paid maid to the Gellman family, Caroline Thibodeaux. Spending her days in the household’s basement, she is daily surrounded by a magical world piles of laundry and singing washing machines.
Living a life of simple means, she barely has any money of her own. But 8-year old Noah Gellman regularly sneaks downstairs to see her, and one day slips a little more money into Caroline’s pocket. Soon, the limits of who and how far the winds of change can truly reach are put to the test…
Olivier Award-winner Sharon D. Clarke reprises her lauded role as Caroline Thibodeaux, with extensive theatre credits including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Eugenius, Ghost the Musical, Hairspray and We Will Rock You. The musical features a book and lyrics by Tony Kushner (Angels in America) and music by Jeanine Tesori.
She is joined by Naana Agyei-Ampadu, Me’sha Bryan, Keisha Amponsa Banson, Alastair Brookshaw, Angela Caesar, Teddy Kempner, Dujonna Gift-Simms, Sue Kelvin, Ako Mitchell, Tanisha Spring, Abiona Omonua, Vincent Pirillo and Lauren Ward with Cassiopeia Berkeley-Agyepong, Zalika Henry, Teddy Wills, Laura Medforth and Timothy Quinlan. Nine young performers will play the roles of Noah, Jackie and Joe. Aaron Gelkoff, Isaac Forward and Jack Meredith will alternate the role of Noah. The role of Joe will be alternated by Josiah Choto, David Dube and Raphael Higgins-Hume. Kenya Sandy, Mark Mwangi and Jeremiah Waysome will alternate the role of Jackie.
Michael Longhurst (Amadeus and Constellations at the National Theatre) directs the production, which features choreography by Ann Yee, design by Fly Davis, lighting design by Jack Knowles and sound design by Paul Arditti, with musical direction by Nigel Lilley.
An evocative musical that has been hailed by audiences and critics alike, the production takes place in America at a time of significant social upheaval. Caroline, or Change plays a limited season at the Playhouse Theatre from 20 November 2018, with an official opening on 28 November 2018.
