About the show

The Shakespeare’s Globe production of Emilia gets its West End transfer with a limited run at Vaudeville Theatre. This important and beguiling new play by playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm tells the feminist tale of Emilia Bassano, a British poet who was purportedly Shakespeare's muse. The production plays from 8 March 2019 until 15 June 2019, offering a second chance to anybody who didn't catch the Globe run.

Bassano, who is often credited as England’s very first feminist writer, was a theological pioneer, poet, the founder of a school and a mother. The plethora of letters, legal records and poems she left behind ensure that her life and times are well documented.

Morgan Lloyd Malcolm wrote Emilia under commission by Michelle Terry for Shakespeare's Globe, marking the first original commission by Michelle Terry as new Artistic Director. A successful playwright and screenwriter, she has written for Soho Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company/Clean Break Theatre and Hampstead Theatre among others. Belongings and The Wasp are two of her most acclaimed works for the stage.

An all-female creative team features direction from Nicole Charles, musical composition from Bill Barclay, choreography from Anna Morrissey and design and costumes from Joanna Scotcher.

For the West End run, the Emilias will be played by Saffron Coomber, Adelle Leonce, and Clare Perkins. Further casting features Nadia Albina, Jenni Maitland, Anna Andresen, Jackie Clune, Sarah Seggari, Sophie Stone, Charity Wakefield, Carolyn Pickles, Amanda Wilkin and Tanika Yearwood.

Don’t miss this witty and galvanising new play during its Vaudeville Theatre season from 8 March 2019 until 15 June 2019.
