About the show

Chichester Festival Theatre’s latest production of Gypsy starring Imelda Staunton has made its way to the West End's Savoy Theatre. Gypsy is widely considered to be the greatest Broadway musical of all time.

Gypsy is a 1959 musical featuring music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The book is by Arthur Laurents and is loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous striptease artist.

The show focuses on pushy show biz mother momma Rose and her desperate attempts to make her young daughters stars. At first it is Baby June that is the family star, but when she quits the act the attention is turned to her shy sister Baby Louise. With Rose’s encouragement Louise becomes a successful stripper.

The iconic score includes such classics as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, “Together (Wherever We Go)”, “Some People” and “Rose’s Turn” to name but a few.

This production reunites Imelda Staunton and director Jonathan Kent, who directed her in Chichester’s acclaimed 2013 production of Sweeney Todd. Sondheim was so impressed with Staunton’s performance as Mrs Lovett that he said she’d be perfect for the role of Momma Rose.

Imelda Staunton is perhaps best known for playing the title role in the Mike Leigh classic Vera Drake, a performance that earned her an Oscar nomination and won her the BAFTA. She also gave a show stealing turn as the evil Professor Dolores Umbridge in The Harry Potter series.

Gypsy has not been seen in the West End for more than 40 years, so this production will bring a well loved musical to a whole new theatre going generation.
