About the showAfter an initial run at the RSC, Mike Poulton’s Imperium transfers to the Gielgud Theatre for a limited 12-week season in the West End. Adapted from best-selling novelist Robert Harris’ Cicero trilogy, the historical thriller comprises six one-act plays in two alternating parts; Imperium I: Conspirator and Imperium II: Dictator.
Both productions document the rapid downfall of the Republic of Rome, casting an eye over the influence of philosopher and orator Cicero. Imperium I: Conspirator is a story told through Cicero’s loyal secretary, following the rhetorician’s early success that paved the way to a brutal and bloody end of the Republic.
Richard McCabe leads the cast as Cicero, alongside Joseph Kloska as his servant Tiro, who narrates the productions. McCabe is a Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor who earned the accolades for his role in The Audience, and who is a familiar face on the BBC’s Collateral. Kloska is best-known for his role in Netflix’s The Crown.
Additional casting for the production includes Nicholas Boulton, Guy Burgess, Daniel Burke, Jade Croot, Peter De Jersey, Joe Dixon, John Dougall, Michael Grady-Hall, Oliver Johnstone, Paul Kemp, Patrick Knowles, Hywel Morgan, David Nicolle, Siobhan Redmond, Patrick Romer, Christopher Saul, Eloise Secker and Simon Thorp.
Imperium is directed by Gregory Doran, Artistic Director of the RSC, and adapted for the stage by Mike Poulton, whose critically-acclaimed adaptations of Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies played in the West End in 2014. Creative team includes designer Anthony Ward, lighting designer Mark Henderson and sound designer Claire Windsor, with compositions by Paul Englishby.
Adapted from a series of best-selling novels, this searing duo of plays runs at the Gielgud Theatre for a strictly limited season. The productions play at the London venue from June 30th to September 8th 2018, with previews beginning June 14th 2018.
