About the show

Following its blisteringly energetic London premiere at the Southwark Playhouse, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights plays a limited run at the King’s Cross Theatre. This life-affirming musical about a community on the brink of change is one of the most unique shows on stage in London this year.

We are steered through the lively Manhattan neighbourhood of Washington Heights by Usnavi, a Dominican-American store owner who is named after the first thing his parents saw when they arrived in America: a US Navy ship.  Through a Latin and hip-hop inspired score, we learn the individual stories of struggle in the community.  From Nina who is unable to attend college after losing her scholarship, to Vanessa who dreams of a home downtown, and Benny who wants to open his own business, In the Heights explores what it is that makes us feel like we belong.  With echoes of West Side Story and Rent, this musical celebrates our survival instinct and the durability of love, hope and music.

In the Heights was first seen Off-Broadway in 2007 before transferring to Broadway in 2008 and was nominated for 13 Tony Awards. It won four including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Choreography. Composer, actor, rapper and lyricist, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who originated the role of Usnavi, was recently awarded a MacArthur Foundation ‘Genius Grant’ thanks to his work on In the Heights and the current Broadway smash-hit, Hamilton.

Several cast members from the original London production will reprise their roles, including Victoria Hamilton-Barritt (Mamma Mia!, West Side Story) who received rave reviews for her performance as the outrageously dramatic salon owner, Daniela. Sam Mackay (The Royal Court, National Theatre) stars as Usnavi alongside Sugababes’ Jade Ewen as Vanessa. Director, Luke Sheppard states that the cast and creative team are very much looking forward to immersing their audience “in the sound and sweat of this passion-infused piece”.

In the Heights opens at the King’s Cross Theatre on October 3rd 2015 and will play there until November 1st 2015.

Who Should See It?

In the Heights is a welcome breath of sultry summer Manhattan air amongst the standard West End shows – if you’re looking for something a bit different, this is it!  Fans of Rent and West Side Story will enjoy this tale of survival instinct.
