About the show

Jill Santoriello’s haunting new musical It Happened in Key West arrives at the Charing Cross Theatre for a strictly limited summer season. Based on the true story of an x-ray technician who meets the girl of his dreams, this scary story is adapted into a romantic comedy musical that is an outrageous, yet deeply moving, take on the events that rocked the island of Key West.

Set in the 1930’s It Happened in Key West follows real eccentric scientist Carl as he finds Elena, the woman he has been dreaming of. When she is struck by the deadly disease of tuberculosis, it seems that their fate together comes to a terrible ending. That is, until he steals her body from the graveyard to do the biggest fixer-upper job over the course of history…

American actor Wade McCollum (Ernest Shackleton Loves Me) stars as Carl, opposite Alyssa Martin (The Clockmaker's Daughter) as Elena. Further casting includes Val Adams, Miguel Angel, Alexander Barria, Mary-Jean Caldwell, Andrea Golinucci, Siwan Henderson, Sophia Lewis, Guido Garcia Lueches, Hannah McIver, Ross McLaren, Johan Munir, Nuno Queimado.

A thrilling new musical that pulls into question the purity of love, It Happened in Key West is created by multi-award-winning composer Jill Santoriello and features a book and additional lyrics by Jason Huza and Jeremiah James. The production features costume design by Lisa Zinni and animation by Brendan Huza, with musical direction by Robert Felstein.

Documenting the true events of a small island that was rocked by this shocking crime, It Happened in Key West is guaranteed to stir sympathy, intrigue and disgust, in this romanticised new musical. Like no other musical in the West End, It Happened in Key West plays at the Charing Cross Theatre for a limited summer season. The production runs from July 4th to August 18th 2018.
