Local Hero the musical is based on the 1983 Scottish comedy-drama starring Peter Riegert, Denis Lawson, Fulton Mackay and Burt Lancaster. Its filming locations covered several areas of Scotland, including Morar and Arisaig on the coast. The stage show has its premiere at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, before continuing to the Old Vic.
Up-and-coming executive Mac MacIntyre is eager to prove himself at Texan giant Knox Oil. He believes his chance has come when he's sent to Scotland to buy up a small seaside village to make room for refinery. It's not long before he realises that pricing up this idyllic corner of the world is not as easy as he'd thought.
The production has a book by Bill Forsyth and David Greig (Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax) and direction from John Crowley (Brooklyn, The Goldfinch). Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame is responsible for the show's songs and music.
