About the show
After massively popular runs on Broadway and in Edinburgh, John Tiffany’s acclaimed revival of the much loved Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie to London’s West End. This hotly anticipated transfer began performances at the start of January 2017.The Glass Menagerie is a beautifully touching masterpiece focusing on a family trying to stay afloat, with nothing but their dreams and desires to keep them going. The plot follows the matriarch Amanda Wingfield, who frantically tries to help her fragile daughter, by encouraging her son Tom to bring home gentlemen callers for her, while Tom himself dreams of getting away from his warehouse job and his frustrating home life.
The play is one of Tennessee Williams’ finest works, a man known for being one of the greatest American dramatists of the 20th century. Creating many classics such as A Streetcar Named Desire, The Rose Tattoo and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.
The Glass Menagerie is the latest in a long line of huge successes for director John Tiffany, who has received great acclaim for his plays Black Watch and Let The Right One In as well as his work on the adaptation of the film Once. He has recently been further thrust into the international limelight by directing Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, one of the most popular plays of all time, having instantly sold out its initial run.
The play was originally performed at the American Repertory Theater, before transferring to Broadway and later coming to the Edinburgh Festival. The play has already received great acclaim in both America and Scotland, including winning John Tiffany the Tony Award for Best Director.
The multi award-winning American actress Cherry Jones (Stepping Out, Pride’s Crossing) has reprised her original role as Amanda Wingfield following stints on both Broadway and in Edinburgh, while from the Edinburgh cast Michael Esper plays Tom (The Last Ship, Lazarus) and Kate O’Flynn (A Taste of Honey, Port) plays Laura. Broadway star, Brian J Smith (The Columnist, Three Changes), also has returned as the Gentleman Caller.
