About the show

The Jamie Lloyd Company return to the West End for a five-month-long residency at the Harold Pinter Theatre, with seven productions from September 2018 to February 2019. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Nobel Prize-winning playwright, the Pinter at the Pinter Season brings to life some of Harold Pinter’s finest one-act plays in a series of double-bills starring celebrity actors. One for the Road / The New World Order / Mountain Language / Ashes to Ashes kicks off the season, playing in rep with The Lover / The Collection starring David Suchet. With potent themes of politics, punishment and the abuse of power, the first production is a provocative bill suited to a modern audience. First published in 1984, One for the Road is one of Pinter’s most dangerous works, following a ruthless government official preparing to interrogate an insurgent and his innocent family. As the terrifying torture increases, it becomes clear that the torturer may in fact be more tortured than the victims themselves. Themes of power and politics continue in the second act, where The New World Order explores how the abuse of power and manipulation can be legitimised all in the name of freedom and democracy, as two brutal interrogators begin to inflict horrifying punishment on a blind-folded rebel. Multi-award winning actress Lia Williams directs the final act, Ashes to Ashes, which is richly atmospheric and compelling piece that examines how the increasingly dark nightmare of human atrocity can affect the recesses of a couple’s dark living room. Three contrasting pieces that offer an evening exploring the brutality of rebellion, the plays feature a stellar cast, including Paapa Essiedu (Hamlet, Kiri) and Maggie Steed (Chewing Gum). Further casting includes Kate O'Flynn (The Glass Menagerie), Jonjo O'Neill and Sir Antony Sher. Featuring a variety of Pinter’s best-known and lesser-performed plays, the season at the West End theatre boasts star-studded casts and stellar creative teams under the leadership of Jamie Lloyd (Doctor Faustus, The Homecoming, The Maids). A gripping bill of thrillers, One for the Road / The New World Order / Mountain Language / Ashes to Ashes is the first production in the season and runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 6 September to 20 October 2018, with a press night on 28 September 2018.
