About the show
Back by popular demand Urinetown hits the West End. This hilarious satirical musical originally delighted audiences on Broadway back in 2001, and finally made its London premiere at the St James Theatre Victoria in February 2014. Olivier Award winning director Jamie Lloyd’s production was a hit with audiences and critics alike sparking this well deserved West End transfer. Set in the future after a terrible drought, evil business tycoon Caldwell B. Cladwell makes his money by charging citizens to use public toilets. Claiming it is a ‘privilege to pee’, fines are enforced against anyone wanting to urinate and are upheld by a brutal police force led by Penelope Pennywise. Those who risk peeing in the street find themselves sent to a place from which they’ll never return – Urinetown. The city needs a revolution, and for that to happen they need to find a leader. However unlikely he may be… Urinetown features music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and a book and lyrics by Greg Kotis. The show won three Tony Awards, for Best Original Score, Best Book and Best Direction. It has since been seen all over the USA. Urinetown is a musical with a difference subverting the normal musical style and parodying famous musicals such as The Threepenny Opera and Les Miserables. This production features stunning designs by Soutra Gilmour. Olivier Award winner Jenna Russell reprises her role as Penelope Pennywise. Along with Jonathan Slinger as Officer Lockstock and Marc Elliott as Mr. McQueen. Matthew Seadon-Young takes on the role of Bobby Strong and Caldwell B. Cladwell will be played by Simon Paisley Day. Please note images and videos are from the original production at the St. James theatre.
