About the show

After a sold-out season in 2008, the incredibly popular West Side Story returns to Sadler’s Wells for a fiery limited season during its UK tour. Performed across the world, Stephen Sondheim’s heart-wrenching musical is based on Romeo and Juliet, following two doomed, star-crossed lovers.

An unforgettable tale of love, war and friendship, West Side Story takes place in a New York neighbourhood in the mid 1950’s. There’s a rivalry between the American Jets and Puerto Rican Sharks, who battle daily. When one of the Jets, Tony, falls for Maria, the sister of the hot-tempered leader of the Sharks, loyalty becomes the name of the game.

Soon, the battle between the groups hits breaking point, and the pair are forced to confront their biggest fears. West Side Story features Sondheim’s classic score, with stand-out numbers including “Tonight”, “America” and “I Feel Pretty”, amongst many more.

Featuring electrifying choreography by the legendary Jerome Robbins, this extraordinary production includes a cast including Katie Hall (Phantom of the Opera) as Maria and Louis Maskell as Tony, as well as Djalenga Scott (Chicago) as Anita and Jack Wilcox (Singin’ in the Rain) as Riff.

Directed by Joey McKneely, West Side Story features a book by Arthur Laurents, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Sondheim. A high energy, pivotal musical that has defined musical theatre for years, West Side Story opens at Sadler’s Wells for a limited number of performances.
