About the show

Comedian Adam Kay is back with his confronting yet hilarious show This Is Going to Hurt (Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor). Candidly reading aloud entries from the journal he kept whilst working as a junior doctor, Kay adds music and stand-up, bringing the NHS front line into vivid, visceral relief. A sell-out success at Edinburgh Fringe Festivals 2016, 2017 and 2018, the show went on to garner huge popularity on its UK tour. Now it returns to the Garrick for a strictly limited run from 18 February 2019.

Kay is an award-winning comedian and writer who has contributed to and appeared in TV programmes like Blind Date, Mrs Brown's Boys, Mitchell & Webb and Bounty Hunters. On the other side of the camera he counts appearances in 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Newsnight and more. He has written a great many features and columns for The Sunday Times, The Observer and other publications besides.

This Is Going to Hurt is accompanied by a physical book of the same title. This Sunday Times bestseller was penned by Kay himself, and has earned several awards. It is even being adapted into an eight-part BBC series. Rave reviews and endorsements have poured in for the book from top publications as well as show business names. Audience members will be able to purchase copies of the book after the Garrick show.

Pronounced ‘hilarious and heartbreaking’ by Charlie Brooker, Adam Kay: This Is Going to Hurt offers a unique peek into the tribulations of an NHS junior doctor. Spoof songs, skilful wordplay, squeamish horror stories and sensational first-hand observations conspire to create an unforgettable show that speaks to our current moment. Catch it at the Garrick from 18 February to 19 March 2019

Who Should See It?
