About the show
Following sell-out seasons in London at the St James Theatre and Arts Theatre, Joshua Harmon’s hilarious and acerbic comedy transferred to the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Bad Jews was the best selling play to date at the Ustinov Studio and St James Theatre, and was a riotously funny addition to the Haymarket season. A small Manhattan apartment becomes the venue for a big family bust-up when three cousins get together after the death of their Grandfather. Having survived the Holocaust, he leaves behind a treasured family heirloom, and the cousins will stop at nothing to get their hands on it. Bossy and pious Daphna fights it out against wealthy and academic Liam, while Jonah tries to avoid conflict and keep schtum. Audiences were left to laugh and cringe in equal measures as the cousins humiliate, interrogate and antagonise to get the upper hand. Ilan Goodman reprised his role as Liam. Goodman has a wealth of stage experience, including the premieres of Adam Rapp’s Red Light Winter and Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel. Kinley, Ailsa Joy and Jos Slovick joined him in what was an energetic and uproarious young cast. Bad Jews was directed by Michael Longhurst. Longhurst had recently directed Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal in If There Is I Haven’t Found it Yet, and also had great success with Constellations which received 4 Olivier Award nominations and won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play 2012. Michael had also won the prestigious Jerwood Directors Award at the Young Vic. Bad Jews played at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from 8 February 2016 until 19 March 2016.
