About the show

The Theatre Royal Bath's recent production of August Wilson's 'Fences' opens at the Duchess Theatre in London's West End after a successful UK tour. Directed by Paulette Randall, the production stars Lenny Henry as Troy Maxson, after last appearing on stage in 'Othello' and 'The Comedy of Errors' at the National Theatre. He is best known for his stand up comedy and work with charity Comic Relief.

Fences is set in 1957 Pittsburgh and is the sixth play in Wilson's ten part Pittsburgh Cycle which explores face relations and the African-American community in Pennsylvania. The play follows 53 year old Troy, an ex baseball player who has become bitter with his now menial life. After serving a prison sentence for committing an accidental murder, he was unable to break through the race barrier into playing in Major League Baseball.

Fences was originally written in 1983 and had its Broadway premiere in 1987 starring James Earl Jones. The play won the Tony Award for Best Play along with the highly coveted Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was last seen in London in 1990 at the Garrick Theatre.
