About the show

Rebel Wilson will be starring as Miss Adelaide from the 28 of June for a limited 8 week run until 21 August.

Following successful runs in Chichester and London's Savoy Theatre, Guys and Dolls transferred to the Phoenix Theatre to continue dazzling audiences with its stellar direction from Gordon Greenberg and stunning choreography by Andrew Wright and Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta.

Guys and Dolls is based on a couple of short stories by Damon Runyon, notably The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown and Blood Pressure. The book is written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. The famous score includes the popular songs “Luck Be a Lady”, “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” and “My Time of Day”.

The musical first premiered on Broadway in 1950 and was an instant hit, becoming the recipient of the 1951 Tony Award for Best New Musical. It was so successful it was even made into a Hollywood film starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine. The show has since gone on to enjoy countless revivals including most notably Richard Eyre’s 1982 revival at the National Theatre starring Bob Hoskins.

Set in New York during the prohibition era the show tells the story of serial gambler Nathan Detroit who needs to raise the money for an illegal craps game. Meanwhile his long suffering finance Miss Adelaide grows tired of waiting for him to marry her. Nathan resolves to make a bet he cannot loose with notorious gambler Sky Masterson, that Masterson can’t get the leader of the save-a-soul mission and all round good girl Sarah Brown to go for dinner with him in Havana. However things don’t work out quite according to Nathan’s plan in this musical about romance and gambling.

The latest production at the Phoenix Theatre includes new leading cast members including Samantha Spiro as Miss Adelaide and Richard Kind as Nathan Detroit. Samantha Spiro is a double Olivier Award winner who is best known for her work in Cleo, Camping, Emanuelle and Dick, in which she portrayed Barbara Windsor. Film and television star Richard Kind is famed for his roles in the American sitcoms Mad About You and Spin City. He is also a recognised voice over artist in big budget animation films including Toy Story 3 and Cars.

Guys and Dolls is playing at the Phoenix Theatre after the departure of Bend it like Beckham. The show opened with previews from the 19th of March 2016.
