About the show

Peter Konwitschny’s celebrated modern production returns to the English National Opera.

The eternally popular La Traviata is an opera in three acts composed by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave.

The opera was first performed at the La Fenice opera house in Venice in 1853.

The title translates as ‘The Fallen Woman’ and it is based on ‘La dame aux Camelias’ a play which was itself based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils.

The story revolves around Violetta Valery a notorious courtesan who falls madly in love with a young nobleman Alfredo, and gives up her old life. Unbeknown to Alfredo, Violetta is approached by his father Giorgio Germont who demands that she break of her relationship with his son for the sake of the family’s reputation. Violetta reluctantly agrees. Alfredo suspects his father is behind Violetta’s sudden change of heart and confronts her at a party she is attending with the Baron. Worried that the Baron will challenge Alfredo to a duel she tries to get him to leave. Alfredo misunderstands and believes she is in love with the Baron. He publicly humiliates her and throws his winnings from the gambling table at her feet in payment of her services. In the next scene Violetta’s tuberculosis has worsened Alfredo hearing of the great sacrifice she had made for him and his family rushes to her side to beg her forgiveness and she dies in his arms.

Soprano Elizabeth Zharoff makes her UK debut as Violetta, she is joined by Ben Johnson as Alfredo and Anthony Michaels-Moore as Giorgio Germont.
