About the show
'Privates on Parade' is the inaugural show in the year long Michael Grandage Season which sees the director's own company take over the Duke of York's Theatre in London's West End and bring together some of the biggest names of stage and screen for a collection of play revivals and new writing. Peter Nichols' 1977 play focuses on the fictional Song and Dance Unit of South East Asia (SADUSEA) who are a group of male entertainers stationed in Singapore and Malaysia at the end of World War Two. As Private Steven Flowers is sent to join the group, he is met by the flamboyant Captain Terri Dennis who teaches him all he needs to know about entertaining the troops. Complete with cross-dressing antics, the Captain re-imagines characters such as Carmen Miranda, Vera Lynn and Marlene Dietrich which lead to a hilarious comedy in the most unlikely of situations. Directed by Michael Grandage the show will also feature designs by Christopher Oram. Musical Direction will be by Jae Alexander. The play was last seen in the West End back in 2001, directed by Grandage at the Donmar Warehouse.
