About the show
Olivier Award-winning choreographer Drew McOnie directs Matt Cardle, Zizi Strallen and Jonny Labey in Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom the Musical, which dances into the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre for a limited season. After a successful revival at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2016, the vibrant production comes to the London stage, bringing with it some sensational dance! Adapted from Baz Luhrmann’s 1992 film of the same name, Strictly Ballroom is the heart-warming story of Scott, a competitive ballroom dancer who insists on bending the rules to create his own moves. When he teams up with left-footed partner Fran, Scott goes out of his way to follow his heart and win the Pan Pacifics his own way. With a book by Luhrmann and Craig Pierce, Strictly Ballroom features a stellar score from hit artists including Doris Day and Cyndi Lauper. Boasting songs from the original film, the musical includes tunes such as “Love is in the Air”, “Time After Time”, “Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps” and “Standing in the Rain”. Drew McOnie leads the production, with previous credits including Olivier Award-winning shows In the Heights and Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as On the Town at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Writer Baz Luhrmann is best known for his unique brand of films, such as The Great Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge. Strictly Ballroom features set design by Soutra Gilmour, costume design by Catherine Martin, lighting design by Howard Hudson and sound design by Gareth Owen. The musical features a stellar cast, including well-known X Factor star Matt Cardle (Memphis) as Wally Strand, opposite Jonny Labey (EastEnders, Dance Dance Dance) as Scott Hastings and Zizi Strallen (Follies, Cats, Hairspray) as Fran. Additional casting includes Michelle Bishop as Pam Short, Ivan De Freitas as Merv, Gabriela Garcia as Vanessa Cronin, Charlotte Gooch as Tina Sparkle, Richard Grieve as Les Kendall, Liam Marcellino as Wayne Burns, Stephen Matthews as Doug Hastings, Fernando Mira as Rico, Eve Polycarpou as Abuela, Lauren Stroud as Liz Holt and Gary Watson as Ken Railings, as well as Anna Francolini as Shirley Hastings and Gerard Horan as Barry Fife. Ensemble casting includes Chris Bennett, Chrissy Brooke, Hannah Fairclough, Selina Hamilton, Christopher D Hunt, Luke Jackson, Justin-Lee Jones, Robin Kent, Jacob Maynard, Leanne Pinder, Tinovimbanashe Sibanda and Dale White. A colourful production that inspired the world to dance, Strictly Ballroom the Musical plays at the Piccadilly Theatre from March 16th 2018, with a press night on April 11th 2018.
