About the show
A much loved story through countless generations, a new version of the musical of The Secret Garden has come to the Ambassadors Theatre in London this summer for its European premiere run. Based on the classic Frances Hodgson Burnett book and adapted from the 1991 Broadway smash hit, The Secret Garden opened on 27th July 2016 and is running until 31st August 2016.Taking place in the early 1900s, The Secret Garden tells the tale of a young girl called Mary Lennox, who was born in India but has recently lost her parents to disease and become and orphan, sent to live with her unknown relatives in England.
Despite being unhappy and sour when she arrives, a kindly maid called Martha and her gardener brother Dickon, soon become friends with her as they discover the secrets the house and the garden contain. Soon, the adventures that they have start to have a far greater effect on not just their lives, but the lives of the wider family.
From film adaptations and stage plays, Frances Hodgson Burnett’s book has been adapted in a range of ways throughout the years, however the Broadway musical version is one of the most loved. Written by Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon, the original production ran for over 700 performances and was nominated for 7 Tony Awards.
This new version is condensed to a 70 minute running time, specifically to encourage child actors to take up the lead roles and have a chance to prove themselves on the West End Stage. After auditioning over 2000 young hopefuls, The Secret Garden exhibits some of the country’s most exciting up and coming talent in a rotating cast.
This new production is brought to you by the same team the created Annie Jr which similarly gave 350 young actors their first chance on a London stage, while receiving great critical and audience praise. The Secret Garden is directed by Rupert Hands, choreographed by Jamie Neale and has musical direction by Richard Barkeer.
The Secret Garden is one of the most beautiful and enchanting productions on the London stage this summer, perfect for families wanting to relive one of the greatest stories ever told. The show began previews on 27th July 2016 and will run until 31st August 2016.
