Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!) directs the world premiere of dazzling new musical Tina: The Tina Turner Musical at London’s Aldwych Theatre. Coming to the West End for the first time, the production brings to life the stunning story of one of the world’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll artists, Tina Turner, featuring a back catalogue of her greatest hits.
Growing from humble beginnings in Tennessee to becoming a world-famous superstar, Tina Turner’s career has spanned over half a century. First rising to fame during the 1960’s, alongside partner and then-husband Ike Turner, the two became renowned for their live performances and chart-topping songs such as “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine”.
Going on to establish an international solo career, Turner was catapulted into the spotlight after her 1984 album Private Dancer earned three Grammy Awards. After delivering hit after hit and earning a further eight Grammys, she was introduced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.
Brought to the stage by Stage Entertainment, Joop van den Ende and Tali Pelman and Tina Turner herself, Tina brings to life this phenomenal story, set against the backdrop of some of her most famous songs, including “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, “Proud Mary”, “River Deep Mountain High” and “Simply the Best”.
Nkeki Obi-Melekwe stars as the iconic Tina, making her West End debut. A graduate of the The University of Michigan's School of Music, Theater and Dance, she marked her off-Broadway debut in the musical Alice by Heart. Her television appearances include roles in Smilf and Bull. Obi-Melekwe is joined by Ashley Zhangazha (Death of a Salesman, Guys and Dolls) as Ike Turner, as well as Madeline Appiah as Zelma Bullock, Lorna Gayle as GG, Tom Godwin as Phil Spector/Terry Britten, Francesca Jackson as Rhonda Graam, Aisha Jawando as Alline Bullock, Natey Jones as Richard Bullock/Raymond Hill, Gerard McCarthy as Erwin Bach and Ryan O'Donnell as Roger Davies.
Additional casting includes Tsemaye Bob-Egbe, Keisher Downie, Kit Esuruoso, Jammy Kasongo, Sia Kiwa, Jason Langley, Kayleigh McKnight, Baker Mukasa and Tanisha Spring, alongside Derek Aidoo, Gavin Alex, Edward Bourne, Candace Furbert, Hannah Jay-Allan and Rodney Vubya.
From 8 October 2019, Tina Turner will be played by Aisha Jawando, who currently understudies at the Aldwych Theatre.
Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, who has helmed the ever-successful Mamma Mia! as well as the recent Shakespeare Trilogy at the Donmar Warehouse, Tina is written by Olivier Award-winner Katori Hall (The Mountaintop), with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins. Further creative team includes choreographer Anthony van Laast and designer Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Bruno Poet and sound design by Nevin Steinberg.
A sparkling new musical that delves into the emotional, heart-warming story of the legendary performer, Tina opened at the Aldwych Theatre on 21 March 2018, with an official opening on 17 April 2018.
